How does a GM know if a certain player is going to effect the team on and off of the field? Certain players could help a particular team on and off the field. This is what a GM looks for in a player whether or not they can perform on the football field and effect the locker room environment. GM's are not just looking for a player who can perform but also be a leader that others can follow.
An example of this is Kam Chancellor, who is a tremendous player for the Seattle Seahawks. As stated by his current teammate Earl Thomas stated, "He has so much experience, he has become an incredible leader off the field. Everybody’s morale was just high with him out there with us." Chancellor is a very important player for that organization and the GM is more than willing to give Chancellor more money and bonuses because of Kam's workload and product he has produced.
However, some players have proved to desire more money than they deserve. For example, Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears. In his career in Chicago, Cutler has only one postseason win, against a team that had a record below .500. Also he is getting paid over $120 million over a 6-year deal. He hasn't had any breakout seasons, even when the team acquired Brandon Marshall, and Alshon Jeffrey, who both are phenomenal receivers.

Carbon Tax

Carbon Tax
Image result for carbon tax

Would a carbon tax be effective in reducing GHG emissions while still growing the economy? David W. Kreutzer, Ph.D. of the Center for Data Analysis examined the Boxer-Sanders Carbon Tax proposed in the Climate Security Act of 2013. The bill would’ve been $20 per metric ton of carbon and it would’ve risen by 5.6% each year until 2030.
Today, America is spewing about 5,215,200,000 tons of CO2 into the environment each year. With the proposed carbon tax that would be reduced to about 3,500,000,000 a year by 2030. Also, the act included a return dividend of 100% of the collected money to taxpayers. Coal production would drop 60%. This all sounds great, right? Let’s shift our view to the economic standpoint.
Kreutzer and many other analysts predict this plan would cause a loss of 400,000 jobs in three years. A difference of $146 billion in GDP at 2030. Coal employment dropping more than 40%. Gas prices rising $0.20 and electricity prices rising 20% in three years. The average family losing $1,000 of income a year.

Do the costs outweigh the benefits? Is there an effective way to sustain the economy and preserve the environment? How much time do we have before we need to make an environmental change? Will we have to sacrifice our economy for an environment we can live in? McDermott Graph

How Do Teams Decide How Much Money To Trade For An Athlete's Services?

Image result for trade
iraqireporter.us

Do you think that right now you could sign a $100 million contract with a professional sports team? Probably not, because you likely don’t have the skills that the team would consider worthy of such a contract. Teams take many factors into consideration when deciding how much money to pay an athlete. Assistant professor of Sport Management Corinne Farneti explains in a video that a number of factors such as the athlete’s past performances and the team’s salary cap help teams decide a salary for a player.

Age can have a tremendous impact on whether a team would be willing to trade for or sign a player. If a player is young and shows great potential, the team would be more likely to trade for him because he would most likely help that team for many years to come. If a player is old and injury-prone, a team would have 2nd thoughts about trading for him because if he has the wrong injury, his time in the league could be over. Older athletes are also generally more injury-prone, so even if the athlete doesn’t have much injury history, the simple fact that he is getting older automatically increases the risk of injury, so teams may seriously contemplating trading for him, but they usually don’t mind trading him.

An athlete in the prime of his career with many terrific past performances may spark the interest of many NBA teams because they know that if they trade for him, he can easily assimilate into their system and make an immediate impact on the team. Many teams who haven’t made the playoffs in years and are looking for an established star rather than trying to develop a young athlete which could take years will try this method to instantly improve their team. An example of this happening in the NBA is the Los Angeles Clippers signing star point guard Chris Paul who at the time was in the prime of his career, and the Clippers were looking for help so they could win a championship. Teams decide whether they want to make an immediate impact or wait a few years and then be good, and they make decisions based on these prior decisions.

Why Are Teams Willing To Trade More Money Than A Player Is Worth?

Image result for money

                                                                  animal-dream.com

Despite inflation, the NBA is actually getting richer than ever! Forbes magazine author Alex Reimer explains the free agency signings that occurred this past summer and why they occurred. His main argument is that NBA teams aren’t going to hold back on trading millions of dollars to NBA players in exchange for their talents and winning mentalities due to a salary cap increase, and since the players would like more money, they are willing to play for a team that willingly gives them more money than others.

Reimer first explains that between the years of 2001 and 2013, the NBA salary cap has risen $14.5 million. He writes that this is the reason that NBA teams are willing to pay so much money for their players. Around 20 of the 30 teams were able to sign a maximum money contract to a player this summer, so they took advantage by signing players. NBA teams want to pay as much money as possible to get the players that they like on their teams, so even average players are getting big paychecks from NBA teams.

Most of the NBA players signed to big contracts weren’t even star players. Reimer notes that “[o]utside of Kevin Durant...there arguably isn’t another player on the open market who’s worthy of receiving a maximum-contract.” NBA teams are simply paying average players a lot of money because they can. They also want to make sure that the player picks their team over another team by paying the player the most money.

Trading in Sports: What Might Affect It?

Image result for trade nba
                                                     www.sbnation.com

Have you ever wondered why and how teams trade in sports such as basketball? A writer on the website dearsportsfan.com explains how trading works. This website helps fans that want to learn more about sports expand their knowledge. Many things can affect sports trading such as the different forms of a no-trade clause in an athlete’s contract and the fact that it is easy for a traded player to assimilate into his new team’s system.

Trade clauses in contracts can affect an athlete’s ability to be traded. There are two types of no-trade clauses that an athlete can request to be in his contract. A partial no-trade clause means that the athlete has some say as to where and when they can be traded. Full no-trade clauses mean that a player has the ability to deny any trade that the team suggests to him. No-trade clauses are usually only given to star players that have established their worth to a team enough to have dominance over his contract.

In the NBA, most teams run very similar plays. This means that roster changes can be made, and the new player added to the roster can easily adjust to the new team’s style of play because it was most likely identical to his previous team’s style. The NBA is very different from the NFL or NHL, where most teams don’t have the same play styles or formations. Basketball is a free flowing game with fundamental plays being easy to follow on offense and defense, such as the pick-and-roll on offense, and man-to-man defense. This is the reason that roster changes are made more often in basketball than many other sports.

Running Injury

http://ridgwaychiropractic.com/

Injury, it's the one word runners fear most and a word that  keeps non-runners as non-runners. Active Magazine offers a guide to the different ailments and injuries associated with running, Active is one of the leading providers of running information and training guides on the internet is and is trusted by many runners.  From scientific research and examples presented in my source I can conclude that Running can cause negative health effects and injuries for some but not all runners, long distance running can be very beneficial but is not for everyone.

This article is very much informative and doesn't really contain an argument, however the reader can draw conclusions form the information presented.  The conclusion i draw from this article is that running is high risk sport… for some.  This article really speaks to how running injuries only affect some runners, including  a section in each injury saying “who's at risk”.  This really speaks to the pout that many runners, if they train properly, and take care of their bodies may never experience injury, these are people suited to be runners.  Some people however are prone to certain types of injury or ailment, as the article suggest people who “over-pronate their feet, have history of joint problems or have weak hips or quads.”  In conclusion, running as  sport is not for everyone and people who chooses running need to know their body well.

In my following blog posts I will begin to mean the mental and social aspects of why people choose running now that i have examined some of the physical things.

How much does the degree you gret affect how much money you make in the future?

source: qph.ec.quoracdn.net

Does the degree you choose affect how much money you will make in the future? According to the american council on education “On average, college graduates make 84 percent more over a lifetime“ However, a question that many people have is if their college major matters.

According to the American council for education, not all degrees are created equal. They gave the example that “Counseling Psychology majors make an average of $29,000 per year, compared to $120,000 for Petroleum Engineering majors. That’s a difference of 314 percent—or $4.1 million over a 45-year lifetime of work.” This shows that employers will typically choose majors with a more rigorous course load. This is reiterated by the fact that if you have a masters in Counseling Psychology, you make an average of $79,000 a year a 272% increase.

A reason why employers do this is because the supply of people that have a degree in Petroleum engineering is very small, and the supply of people graduating with a counseling psychology degree is a lot. Also, there is a very high demand for Petroleum Engineers since their major is very specialized, causing employers to pay large amounts of money to attract graduates.

Pros and Cons on Signing Nfl Players

https://upload.wikimedia.org

Many NFL teams have signed players throughout the years weather through the NFL draft or free agency. An example, the Chicago Bears, the Bears have made some significant off-season moves for better players despite Cutler's massive contract. The Bears have signed former Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer, also Danny Treviation, Jerrell Freeman, and Akiem Hicks. Also signed Leonard Floyd, and Jordan Howard through the NFL draft who are both starters. Through the first eight weeks of the 2016 NFL season all of these players have made a significant impact to their team.

However, not all signing have been extremely good. For example, in 2014 Demarco Murray leaving Dallas and signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. After the eagles paid for a 5 year deal that costed as much as $40 million dollars. His production on the field was horrendous and Murray only lasted a year before being traded to the Tennessee Titans. Murray went from being the NFL rushing leader in 2014 with over 1800 rushing yards to barley surpassing 700 rushing yards in 2015 with the Eagles. So just because a player had an extremely good season doesn't mean that they will repeat the next year.

Future Research Question: How do general managers know if a player can fit there scheme and is worth signing?

NFL General Managers

Image result for chicago bears general manager

https://www.google.com/search

General Managers in the NFL have one of the hardest if not the hardest jobs in the NFL. They have to do a number of things like, sign players, draft players, scout players, and sign coaches. The second they mess up they get fired. So there job is extremely stressful and it is important for a GM to make the right moves. For example, figuring out if a player fits the scheme that there team runs and is worth signing/drafting.
An example of a general manager making the right move is John Schneider, general manager for the Seattle Seahawks. Schneider is well know for drafting players late in rounds. For example Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Russell Wilson, and KJ Wright. All have been drafted in the third round or later and all have had enormous amounts of success in the league since being drafted. Also signing Doug Baldwin and  Jermaine Kearse as undrafted free agents, both becoming NFL stars.
However, not all general managers have succeed like Schneider. For example, Mike Tannenbaum, general manager for the Miami Dolphins. He has tried to trade for good players but has failed in all the ways possible. For instance, trading for Bryon Maxwell and Kiko Alonso. Both players have performed poorly and both have enormous contracts. Also Tannenbaum has overpaid players like Ndamukong Suh whose making over $114 million on a 6-year deal. To put it in perceptive, Suh is making more money than Aaron Rodgers.

Future Research Question: How do certain players effect a particular team?

How To Get High Without Drugs

http://www.runnersworld.com

Lots of people believe that the only way to get “high” is by using drugs or chemicals, those people aren't runners.  All runners know about the euphoric feeling known as the runners high. The rush of endorphins top the brain due to vigorous physical activity that gives feeling of peace and happiness.  In Runner's World article “how to achieve a runner's high” it addresses the famed feeling and how and why it is achieved.  Runner's World is the foremost online resource for running related news and information. They and I both argue that the runner's high feeling is primary factor that leads people to running.

This article focuses on the role of certain bodily chemicals in the process of achieving runners high, specifically endorphins.  When talking about endorphins the article suggests that the chemical is like “Nature’s home-brewed opiates.”  essentially endorphins are our body's natural healthy way to mimic some of the most addictive drugs on the planet, endorphins act like natural painkillers, they are released when the body is in state of discomfort, which is easy to achieve while running.  So the fact that this conditions for endorphin release are prime during running and that when endorphins are released it feels euphoric, people are continually drawn back to running in hopes to experience this high again.

Now we have covered both the physical side and the emotional side of why runners choose to run, in the next post we will examine the social factors that lead people to choose this sport.  What type of community is set up around running and why is this community draw people in?

Modern Education and 1800s Assembly line, whats the difference?

Image result for assembly line studentsA lot of things have changed over the past century or two, cars can go past 10 mph, a single computer doesn't take up a whole room and we no longer have black and white segregation. This all makes sense because how can a society prosper without abandoning the old and less effective ways of doing things and find better ones. So much new technology and health breakthroughs are coming out seemingly everyday and it seems that everything is keeping up with the times, sadly that's wrong because there is something that stands out like an Amish guy at a Apple store. The education system hasn't changed or evolved since it was decided on during the industrial era by a group of corrupt officials and big factory owners, in fact it’s been needing a change for about 120 years. It amazes me how nobody asks themselves, why do I have to ask the teacher to go the bathroom or get a drink? why can a group of complete strangers control my every day? why can they send home hours of work every night and weekend even though i'm already their for 8 hours a day? and why do they tell you it's not mandatory when you’re not allowed to leave and get punished if you do so? This all because every kid in the U.S. is currently being prepared to work a 1800s factory assembly line job. U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan says, "Our K–12 system largely still adheres to the century-old, industrial-age factory model of education. A century ago, maybe it made sense to adopt seat-time requirements for graduation and pay teachers based on their educational credentials and seniority. Educators were right to fear the large class sizes that prevailed in many schools. But the factory model of education is the wrong model for the 21st century.”  . It isn't a coincidence that we are all put in rows and are given a strict set of rules. They wanted kids to leave the education system ready to follow orders and not question the work they do or expect to be treated like individuals but instead a "class" of workers. Now i'm sure this approach worked fine back in the day but I can't believe we still haven't changed a single thing, we know that no two brains are the same so why teach everyone the same material at the same pace. Why should every kid in the country learn about thermonuclear dynamic equations when less than .01% of students will become a thermonuclear physicist, the reason is is so you would graduate school with no ability to do a real job and without any work experience so that a minimum wage assembly line job would be your only option and job you’ve prepared for. Times are changing but education is not, we need to make changes if we want to start making kids's lived better and end the corruption.

We Can Change the Fishing Industry Without Renting A Boat

source: travelsource.com

It may not seem that, as a consumer, you can do much to change the way we fish. The fishermen will decide what they want to catch and how they want to catch it. But that is the opposite of true. In reality, the entire market for fish could be revolutionized by consumers if we put the effort in. In an article on the Overfishing website (yes, the issue is so prominent it has its own website), the author writes about some possible solutions to the problem that link the power directly to the consumer.

It turns out that the most important thing we can do to help prevent such widespread damage to our oceans is let your new (or old!) knowledge of unsustainable fishing effect what fish you buy, from where, and how often.

1) Think back to my first blogpost about the most commonly purchased fish, and try to buy outside those four. It’s OK to still buy them; it’s just branching out that matters most. It shows fisheries that there is a market for other fish, so they are less likely to overfish one species.

2) Avoid certain fish that are most commonly caught in an unsustainable manner. (I carry around a list of the fish that are best avoidable in my wallet--they’re easily found online, so you can just print one out).

3) BY ALL MEANS, do not buy something we know to be on the endangered species list.

4) Spread the word! The only way we can make a difference is if we all work together.

The article also listed some important regulations that need to be implemented by our politicians and leaders such as Safe Catch Limits, Bycatch Limits, and the complete protection of fragile ecosystems while they recover from previous damage. Of course, the end goal is “to make sure management systems based on these rules are implemented everywhere”, but to get there average people need to show government leaders just how important this issue is.

What are the Incentives in other countries to preserve the environment?

Image result for incentive to recycle

There are many other countries that the U.S. can learn from in order to preserve the environment. Australia for example recycles 60% of its waste. Many other countries have incentives that the United States of America could implement. America should try to implement the incentives that are most effective. So what are these?

Source: http://edienet.s3.amazonaws.com

According to the article "The Global Face of Recycling," India has a whole market for recycling in which "many people make a living    by creating their own recycling factories. It is estimated that the self-made recycling industry employs roughly 200,000 people. It’s not merely taking care of waste, but a way of life and a source of income." The U.S., which is always big on new business opportunities should definiteyl look at improving recycling companies and their incentives. In China, an incentive that the government has implemented is one in which, "The citizens who diligently collect recyclables off the street are numbered around 2.5 million people. These scrap collectors earn the equivalent of $150 a month which is roughly half of what a cab driver earns in that country in the same time frame." Since the U.S. really has nothing like this at all besides some possible tax breaks, this is definitely a big incentive that America could use to help encourage its citizens to improve the environment.
