          How does a GM know if a certain player is going to effect the team on and off of the field? Certain players could help a particular team on and off the field. This is what a GM looks for in a player whether or not they can perform on the football field and effect the locker room environment. GM's are not just looking for a player who can perform but also be a leader that others can follow. 

          An example of this is Kam Chancellor, who is a tremendous player for the Seattle Seahawks. As stated by his current teammate Earl Thomas stated, "He has so much experience, he has become an incredible leader off the field. Everybody’s morale was just high with him out there with us." Chancellor is a very important player for that organization and the GM is more than willing to give Chancellor more money and bonuses because of Kam's workload and product he has produced. 

         However, some players have proved to desire more money than they deserve. For example, Jay Cutler of the Chicago Bears. In his career in Chicago, Cutler has only one postseason win, against a team that had a record below .500. Also he is getting paid over $120 million over a 6-year deal. He hasn't had any breakout seasons, even when the team acquired Brandon Marshall, and Alshon Jeffrey, who both are phenomenal receivers. 

Pros and Cons on Signing Nfl Players

      Many NFL teams have signed players throughout the years weather through the NFL draft or free agency. An example, the Chicago Bears, the Bears have made some significant off-season moves for better players despite Cutler's massive contract. The Bears have signed former Texans quarterback Brian Hoyer, also Danny Treviation, Jerrell Freeman, and Akiem Hicks. Also signed Leonard Floyd, and Jordan Howard through the NFL draft who are both starters. Through the first eight weeks of the 2016 NFL season all of these players have made a significant impact to their team.

     

     However, not all signing have been extremely good. For example, in 2014 Demarco Murray leaving Dallas and signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. After the eagles paid for a 5 year deal that costed as much as $40 million dollars. His production on the field was horrendous and Murray only lasted a year before being traded to the Tennessee Titans. Murray went from being the NFL rushing leader in 2014 with over 1800 rushing yards to barley surpassing 700 rushing yards in 2015 with the Eagles. So just because a player had an extremely good season doesn't mean that they will repeat the next year.

      General Managers in the NFL have one of the hardest if not the hardest jobs in the NFL. They have to do a number of things like, sign players, draft players, scout players, and sign coaches. The second they mess up they get fired. So there job is extremely stressful and it is important for a GM to make the right moves. For example, figuring out if a player fits the scheme that there team runs and is worth signing/drafting.
     An example of a general manager making the right move is John Schneider, general manager for the Seattle Seahawks. Schneider is well know for drafting players late in rounds. For example Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Russell Wilson, and KJ Wright. All have been drafted in the third round or later and all have had enormous amounts of success in the league since being drafted. Also signing Doug Baldwin and  Jermaine Kearse as undrafted free agents, both becoming NFL stars.
     However, not all general managers have succeed like Schneider. For example, Mike Tannenbaum, general manager for the Miami Dolphins. He has tried to trade for good players but has failed in all the ways possible. For instance, trading for Bryon Maxwell and Kiko Alonso. Both players have performed poorly and both have enormous contracts. Also Tannenbaum has overpaid players like Ndamukong Suh whose making over $114 million on a 6-year deal. To put it in perceptive, Suh is making more money than Aaron Rodgers.

Devin Hester, the greatest return man alive gets a new four year deal with the Chicago Bears. ESPN's article "Bears agree to new four-year deal with Hester" is a reliable source because of the author John Clayton being an inside source for the Bears. Also the Bears paying players like Hester is what fans and football experts like to hear but why? This source discusses the salary cap issues for the bears. In order to become a powerhouse team, the Bears have to pay players like Hester, while having enough money to pay other players on the team as well. 

In the article, "Bears agree to four-year deal with Hester" John Clayton emphasizes the importance it is for the Bears to sign a player of Hester's caliber. A player like Devin only comes every decade or so, and if the Bears could they would keep him for his entire career. That is why the Bears are paying Devin Hester 30 million dollars with 15 million guaranteed.

However, how does paying Devin Hester effect the Bears overall, well after Hester signed the contract he would put up monster numbers, which include, 6 more punt returns for touchdowns, one kick return for a touchdown, and 197 receptions for 2508 receiving yards.
