Should College Athletes be Paid?

Why College Athletes Should Be Paid
The NCAA is a “nonprofit organization” that rakes in billions of dollars every year. This organization is cruel and mistreating their employees to an extreme extent. A video titled The NCAA by John Oliver of the talk show last week tonight, which gives credible evidence on all 100s of political and economic issues explains this topic well.
John Olivers video clearly explains that NCAA athletes should be paid because the NCAA can more than easily afford to pay them and has extremely strict regulations to prevent this, and these athletes live a harsh and cruel life.

When you officially choose to become a college athlete the NCAA makes sure they own you from the start. The first thing these athletes have to do is sign a 440 page manual of rules. And if you chose not to sign it then you don’t get to play. Once you are forced to sign this handbook you are officially owned by the NCAA, If you break any of the thousands of rules in this handbook you could risk losing your scholarship. One of the reasons they do this is to make sure athletes have no say in anything that they do, especially when it comes to money. The NCAA is one of the richest organizations in America. “ On average March Madness brings in over a billion dollars in revenue every year.” This is simply one month's worth of profit, not to mention the other 11 months of football, basketball and other sports. You might say well if this is true where does all the money go? The fact is many colleges intentionally spend there money wastefully to make it look like they aren’t wealthy. Have you ever wondered why college stadiums are often bigger than NFL stadiums? Because they can afford it due to not having to pay their players. Also many college coaches are paid more than NFL coaches. “The average NFL coach makes $4.9 million while Alabama's Nick Saban makes $7 million.”Clearly the NCAA can afford to pay these players but chooses not to.
It is not only that the NCAA can play there players, it is also that there are serious reasons to why they should pay their athletes. When you are a college athlete many times it is because you cannot afford your own college, so when you become an athlete your sport is your job that is paying for your education. This means that these athletes cannot have a job that pays them money, there job pays them an education. These athletes are broke, “Sometimes there are hungry nights where i'm not able to eat, where i go to bed and i'm starving” -Shabazz Napier. This is absolutely unacceptable for a player for a player that is working harder than anybody to have to suffer from hunger. Many may argue that it will all be worth it once they go pro and make millions all there hard work will pay off. Well according to Ncaa statistics,“1.6% of NCAA football players go pro, and 1.2% of NCAA basketball players go pro.” So for the remaining 99% of college athletes their career stops after college. In the end these college athletes work harder than anyone else only to get completely ripped off by the NCAA and suffer all for an education that is often very bad.

The Pros and Cons of Paying College Athletes
Source:kystokes.files.wordpress.com
As stated previously there are some obvious issues involved with the NCAA and college athletes. The question that gets brought about is should college athletes get paid? There are many pros and cons to the argument of paying these athletes. An article by Tiffany Patterson of smartasset.com explains these arguments very well.
There are very good reasons to why many people believe that college athletes should be paid. To start there is the simple reasoning that these athletes are putting so much on the line to be a part of their school's team, they are putting their time, effort, and bodies on the line. When these athletes commit to these colleges they have to make huge sacrifices. They can’t get jobs, it’s harder to enjoy a social life, and they are at risk of severely injuring themselves. For these reasons many believe that these athletes deserve some compensation as a settlement to these sacrifices. Not only is it that these athletes deserved to get paid, it's that they can be paid very easily. The NCAA rakes in billions every year, March Madness in particular is a time where the profit made is insane, “Journalist Michael Wilbon has written that seeing the $11 billion deal between the NCAA and CBS/Turner Sports for March Madness between 2011 and 2024 prompted him to change his mind about paying student-athletes.” This shows that the NCAA surely can afford to pay their athletes with all the money that these athletes make for them. It surely doesn't make any sense for the athletes that are the stars actually making the money to not receive any of the profit.
Although there are many good incentives to believe that these athletes deserve to be paid, in the end it is not probable. First many of the athletes who really do deserve to get paid already do through their athletic scholarships. If an athlete is good enough to receive a full ride that could be up to $50,000 they don’t have to pay each year, leaving them debt free out of college. The second reason is that it would take away from the purity of the game. The reason people love college sports so much is because these athletes are much more passionate about the game than paid athletes. Also this could lead to corruption into whoever can pay their athletes the most would have the best team. But finally the main reason why these athletes don’t and can’t get paid is simply because it is too difficult to do. When you start having to pay athletes so many questions would be brought up. Like who gets paid what? Do all athletes get paid even the smaller sports like golf and swimming? How much should these athletes get paid? And much much more, It would be a nightmare to answer all the questions behind paying college athletes. Therefore if student decides to play a college sport they need realize the benefits they receive already and be satisfied with that.

Is Playing a College Sport Worth it?
Source: shermanreport.com
Playing a sport in college is seen as an amazing thing, kids grow up dreaming of being good enough to play in college, but is it really worth it?. An article written by the economist.com -Time for Professional Student Athletes? , By A.S./New York explains this very well from an economic standpoint. Students that play college sports are being ripped off, and scammed by the NCAA and colleges.
One of the key parts of playing a college sport is the misleading glory of an athletic scholarship. The NCAA makes billions of dollars off these athletes and all the athletes get is their tuition, and more often than not only part of their tuition. According to the economist, “It has been argued that it exploits the student athletes who cannot be paid for their talent and labor, other than their athletic scholarships.” These college athletes are essentially owned by their team working full time for their sport. The difference is that they don’t get paid and they also have to manage schoolwork on top of this. If you want to have a social live too, good luck because your live consists of a job that is extremely stressful, and extremely underpaid.
Another disadvantage of being a full time student athlete is that you can only do three things, go to practice, go to school, and study. This eliminates the opportunity for these students to have a job therefore they have no income throughout college. “One alternative is to simply pay the athletes; in addition to their scholarships make them employees of the university.” This topic of paying athletes is a highly disputed topic that makes sense very often. These athletes are working a job much harder than anyone else and are getting no revenue from it. In fact the NCAA puts very strict rules on this prohibiting any forms of possible income from being an athlete. Also these athletes are in a worse place job wise after their college ends.Because of their sports that means they have minimal time to do well in school and to have internships. “Others find the low graduation rates among the top athletes, and questionable curriculum and standards, an affront to universities' central educational mission.” These top athletes are at a much lower chance of graduation than any others because they have to manage their time much more. Because of this they either do not graduate or are forced to take very easy classes that will not help them in the future. For this reason i do support the idea that these athletes need some form of compensation for their sacrifices they are making in order to play for their team.
