The Pros and Cons of Paying College Athletes

Source:kystokes.files.wordpress.com

As stated previously there are some obvious issues involved with the NCAA and college athletes. The question that gets brought about is should college athletes get paid? There are many pros and cons to the argument of paying these athletes. An article by Tiffany Patterson of smartasset.com explains these arguments very well.

There are very good reasons to why many people believe that college athletes should be paid. To start there is the simple reasoning that these athletes are putting so much on the line to be a part of their school's team, they are putting their time, effort, and bodies on the line. When these athletes commit to these colleges they have to make huge sacrifices. They can’t get jobs, it’s harder to enjoy a social life, and they are at risk of severely injuring themselves. For these reasons many believe that these athletes deserve some compensation as a settlement to these sacrifices. Not only is it that these athletes deserved to get paid, it's that they can be paid very easily. The NCAA rakes in billions every year, March Madness in particular is a time where the profit made is insane, “Journalist Michael Wilbon has written that seeing the $11 billion deal between the NCAA and CBS/Turner Sports for March Madness between 2011 and 2024 prompted him to change his mind about paying student-athletes.” This shows that the NCAA surely can afford to pay their athletes with all the money that these athletes make for them. It surely doesn't make any sense for the athletes that are the stars actually making the money to not receive any of the profit.

Although there are many good incentives to believe that these athletes deserve to be paid, in the end it is not probable. First many of the athletes who really do deserve to get paid already do through their athletic scholarships. If an athlete is good enough to receive a full ride that could be up to $50,000 they don’t have to pay each year, leaving them debt free out of college. The second reason is that it would take away from the purity of the game. The reason people love college sports so much is because these athletes are much more passionate about the game than paid athletes. Also this could lead to corruption into whoever can pay their athletes the most would have the best team. But finally the main reason why these athletes don’t and can’t get paid is simply because it is too difficult to do. When you start having to pay athletes so many questions would be brought up. Like who gets paid what? Do all athletes get paid even the smaller sports like golf and swimming? How much should these athletes get paid? And much much more, It would be a nightmare to answer all the questions behind paying college athletes. Therefore if student decides to play a college sport they need realize the benefits they receive already and be satisfied with that.
