Virtual Reality can even be used for a variety of medical purposes, including education and training as well as treatment and therapy. These are only beginning to become implemented, and will undoubtedly continue to develop in the future. Erin Carson, a successful reporter for CNET, writes in the 2015 TechRepublic article “10 Ways Virtual Reality is Revolutionizing Medicine and Healthcare” about these VR implementations.
VR can be used for exposure therapy to deal head-on with crippling fears and phobias, as well as simulations to treat PTSD in former members of the military. Also, it can be used for safe and effective surgical training, pain management, brain assessment and rehabilitation, and even meditation. Not only this, but VR provides opportunities for the homebound or disabled to experience things they never thought possible. Carson explains that all of these things are “currently in practice and continually developing as the technology itself develops too.” As these safe and effective implementations of virtual reality come more into play, companies will have more incentive to invest in the industry. I believe that VR has the potential to become extremely prevalent among companies in the medical field, along with numerous other industries.
